As Seen In VoyageLA Magazine:

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Dessaules.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in a custom home building family in southern Rhode Island and I learned a lot about how homes are put together from a very early age. While other kids may have been at camp or working as a life guard on summer break, I was working on site. When I was young, I would clean up the job sites, vacuum between stud bays after the plumber and electricians made holes for their systems, clean and organize, etc. As I got older and more capable, I was there for all phases of construction and learned the basics of all the trades. I spent an entire summer as a teenager doing millwork prep, so you learn a thing or two about how things should be done.

In 1997, when I was 23 years old with the dream of making a change, I moved from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Palm Springs, California with my partner Kevin Macey and opened a small design studio on North Palm Canyon Drive. We offered interior design services and also designed and built our own line of modern home furnishings. In 2000, we outgrew our Palm Springs location and relocated to our own building in Rancho Mirage. From there, we built our own manufacturing company and successfully grew until the collection was licensed to a Canadian manufacturer. Things went great until the recession came and when the market crashed, we were given the rights to our collection back when our manufacturer closed their operation. During the recession, we opened and closed a Los Angeles showroom, eventually heading back east to work on client projects in Palm Springs.

Now, 20 years later, our design business specializes in turn-key residential interiors and our always growing home collection. The Joel Dessaules Home Collection is hand-crafted in Southern California and embodies all of my design esthetics. I love well-designed products that pass the test of time. Some of our older designs are still some of our best sellers 10-15 years strong.

Has it been a smooth road?
Over the course of 20 years operating an ever-evolving design business, there are always major obstacles. I think that the recession was probably one of the most difficult, but we operated with great optimism and introduced new products of great value to our customers. During this time, we learned how to better source for goods and the importance of offering a great product at a reasonable price. Doing your own thing and doing it well is what always sets you apart from others.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Joel Dessaules Design story. Tell us more about the business.
Joel Dessaules Design Inc. is the desert’s premiere one-stop design firm offering full-service Interior & Exterior Design, specializing in modern and contemporary design with available in-house Architectural Design & Drafting services, all based in our Palm Springs, California office. How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The interior design industry is always changing, just like the lifestyles of the American homeowners. We have also seen a big shift in better long-term planning. Homeowners who plan on aging in place or remain in their home for as long as they’re able, should incorporate the principles of universal design into the home. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) defines universal design as “the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.” Beyond preparing for the future, these design inclusions do make homes much more usable in the present. One great example of this is a current project under construction, that with a few minor changes to the design now, will allow the homeowners to have full wheel chair access to their master bath and spa-like tub & shower room. These small changes in design now will ensure that the homeowners will not have to leave their home until it is absolutely necessary.
