This project originally started with re-designing the bathrooms with the intent of making over the front elevation. The home is a classic mid-century Alexander home in the Racquet Club neighborhood in Palm Springs. With a need to protect the home and its inhabitants from the afternoon sun, we came up with a short term and long term plan to not only provide shade, but create indoor-outdoor spaces throughout the home.
The bathrooms got fresh makeovers with all new plumbing, electrical, lighting, tile and fixtures. The master bath got a little extra upgrade with the addition of a commercial frames glass door leading out to a new enclosed outdoor shower and soaking tub area.
The front elevation received lava veneer from Hawaii to absorb and radiate heat, block walls to provide shade, space and heritage and its topped off with a cantilevered steel "butterfly" shade structure that turns the flat-roofed Alexander into a butterfly.
There is a second shade structure that follows the lines of the front shade structure, creating a covered outdoor dining courtyard complete with lights, fans and misters. The third shade structure over the BBQ creates a shady place to relax and sip a drink poolside with mountain views for days.
In the outdoor dining courtyard is an indoor-outdoor kitchenette which expands the kitchen outdoors in a weather-tight closet. This home is a true entertainers delight and the homeowners are thrilled with the results.
